More tolerance needed

Mike Burckhard, Minot

So much discourse in our society but so little of it civil.

I suggest there are those individuals who have strong opinions on topics involving race, religion, sexuality, politics and finance but are too insecure and close minded to respect the right of others to think, feel, want or need differently than them on these subjects.

These individuals typically have a stronger need to talk and impose their opinions as facts versus wanting to listen or respect another person’s right to a different point of view then them.

Then there are the individuals who also have strong opinions on the same topics but are secure and open minded enough to respect the right of others to think, feel, want or need differently than them on these topics without having to agree with them.

The uncivil individual is intolerant and therefore has to be agreed with, whereas the civil individual is tolerant and secure enough to be disagreed with.

Civil or uncivil, which do you relate to?
