What’s best for Minot

Dennis Klein, Minot

Over the last few weeks and months I’ve read stories in the paper pertaining to needs in Minot perceived by our city council. A new city hall, crosswalks, gathering space, downtown. Despite overwhelming opposition to a downtown gathering space our council continues to waste time and money in pursuit of this project that very few people want and certainly don’t need.

So what does Minot need? Is it a $160,00 crosswalk a short distance from a traffic light or would time, money and energy be better spent on conceiving a better snow control system? Driving around the other day in the slop created by our current system, I would opt for the latter. How about a school bus program? How about cleaning up the weeds and graffiti especially along our main traffic areas rather than debate how much money recycling will cost us, which we don’t want either.

These are a few things that come up when talking about what would make Minot a better place to live. Electing a city council at large with no districts was a mistake as it appears their main concern is downtown. I wonder when was the last time one of them drove down 6th Avenue from Broadway to 13th Street NE – it is very rough.

Two things the council should keep in mind when deciding what’s best for Minot.

1) Minot is not a cultural and champagne center, it is a beer and hot dog town.

2) It will never be Bismarck or Fargo.
