Give them a break

Betty Nordstrom, Minot

My husband and I have received the Minot Daily News for as long as I can remember. I do so enjoy getting up in the morning, having a cup of coffee while reading the newspaper. My first thought when hearing about the “weekend edition” with just one paper was of disappointment.

But then I gave it more thought, and realized it was a lovely gift to give the employees of the newspaper staff – a day off! And yet we still received the news. I now read the funnies and ads on Sundays and the rest on Saturdays.

My husband and I were both private contractors for the Minot Daily News in the past, and delivered papers from Minot to Kenmare, Tolley, Bowbells, Lignite, Crosby, Powers Lake, etc. Our children were also paper carriers in Kenmare.

This was quite a committment because it meant 7 days a week, not a break. This included the time when we had afternoon deliveries during the week and morning deliveries on weekends. And it was also during the time when MDN was transitioned to all morning deliveries.

So please give it a little thought before condemning this new schedule. Maybe it isn’t perfect for you, but I’ll bet someone out there is happy to have a little break, yet keep their job. I see no reason why this can’t work.
