Rethinking senior services

Section 8 is a popular form of subsidized housing. Why can’t this concept be expanded to include independent living?

Most seniors that I’ve talked to want 2 to 3 meals per day and some house-keeping so they can live more comfortably. Yes, there is Meals on Wheels. It is a great program but a meal is like a social event. If you can wait up to 2 to 3 hours for a TV dinner then there is a program available to you.

There are a lot of home health-care agencies that can be of help. Again this does not take into consideration the social event atmosphere. Most assisted living places that offer independent living also include transportation, laundry and a pendent in case you need immediate medical attention. Of course meals and housekeeping have already been discussed.

All of the above comes with a price tag, but why couldn’t it be based on your ability to pay and what your medical needs are? Food for thought.
