Time for millennials to step up

We as Americans have a love of democracy. We believe that our democracy is quintessential to our way of life and the freedoms we enjoy.

So why then has “politics” become such a dirty word? The answer to me is simple: polarization. We all have an opinion, and as Americans we also have the need to share it. But political discussions have this nasty habit of turning into arguments, and then to outright fights. We argue with emotion rather than reason, and this polarization is constantly promoted through the media. This environment has forced an entire generation away from politics when they are needed most.

Lack of millennial representation in government leaves us with a void in our democracy. We are governed by a body of elders, and these septuagenarians make decisions regarding student debt and national healthcare without personal student debts, or the nagging fear of being uninsured.

So as millennials, do we forego our passion for issues? Not at all. Instead, we need to take a step back. We need to research our positions, and logically discuss them openly and without contempt for other opinions. “Because you are just wrong” can no longer be an acceptable response.

Most importantly, we need to get active in government. We need to vote, and protest, and rally around issues of importance. No longer can we stay silent or approach politics with cynicism and arrogance.

Silence is unacceptable acceptance, and cynicism gets us nowhere.
