ND: Strong workforce with low unemployment

Labor Day is a day to pay tribute to American workers. Traditionally it is observed on the first Monday of September so this year we will observe it this coming Monday.

Job Service North Dakota reported that labor statistics for July, the most recent statistics available, show the state’s not seasonally adjusted unemployment was 2.2%. The unemployment rate decreased 0.4 of a percentage point between June and July. The July 2021 rate was 1.2 percentage points higher than the current rate.

Between June 2022 and July 2022 unemployment fell by 1,717, a decrease of 16%, the report also said.

According to the report, North Dakota typically sees a decrease in unemployment numbers between June and July. The over-the-year decrease (July 2021-July 2022) in unemployed labor force was 4,875, a decline of 35.1%

Other North Dakota not seasonally adjusted labor force data in the report include, as of July, 9,005 total unemployed in the state, 405,007 total employed and a total labor force of 414,012.

North Dakota’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was just slightly higher at 2.3% as of July, the report said. That rate ranked sixth among all states’ unemployment rates. South Dakota tied with North Dakota. Minnesota came in first place, with an unemployment rate of 1.8%.

We see the overall workforce picture is good and shows North Dakota is continuing to have a low unemployment rate, the same as our neighbor to the south, South Dakota.
