While the Minot Public School Board is reviewing possible names for the city’s new school and team name or mascot, we thought we would offer our suggestions to help them in this endeavor.

When naming a new school, a partner to Minot High School-Magic City Campus, it seems selecting a name to coincide with that existing school would be most appropriate.

Some names for school, team name or mascot would not be suitable.

But there is one name that has plenty of good reasons to use it: Minot Great Northern Campus.

Great Northern ties in with the history of Minot just as Magic City does with the existing school. We should be proud of our history and this is a way to show that pride through the name of the newest school in the city.

When it comes to the team, why not Stars? Wouldn’t any team want to be called the Stars? The Dallas Stars have that name. And there’s the North Star in the sky. Doesn’t Minot Great Northern Campus Stars have a nice ring to it?

When names are selected for the new school and its team or mascot, it needs to be names that are significant not only to the students and staff but the entire community.

We hope the local school board will give consideration to Great Northern Campus Stars as it selects the names that are best for the new school.
