This recall effort a waste of time

North Dakota Secretary of State Al Jaeger has approved a petition to be circulated to recall Gov. Doug Burgum’s recent election win.

The recall chairman is Michael Coachman, who Burgum defeated in the past Republican primary by almost 80% of the total vote.

The petition asks that Burgum and Lt. Governor Brent Sanford be recalled for the reasons of contempt of the voters and negligence in/of office.

The petition needs more than 89,000 signatures and is doomed to fail.

But one of Coachman’s many gripes toward Burgum is the governor’s handling of the pandemic, including the business restrictions and the mask mandate. Coachmen feels those restrictions and mandates violate personal liberties.

We agree.

Why stop there?

The government and its laws violate other personal liberties.

So, let’s eliminate speed limits, red lights, and stop signs.

We also want to have a choice when it comes to the use of seat belts, turn signals and headlights at night.

Okay, you caught us, we’re being sarcastic.

Your human rights cannot cause harm to someone else or the public or you’re infringing on someone else’s human rights – ie. Public Safety.

Wearing a mask not only protects you, but it also protects strangers. Going the speed limit not only protects you, but it also protects strangers.

We can go on and on, but you get the picture.

Truth is, more than 110,000 people have had COVID-19 in North Dakota. That is more than 14% of the total population of the state.

Right now, we are just happy to be coming out the other side of this pandemic.

We don’t agree with every decision Governor Burgum makes but one thing is for sure: this petition is a waste of time.
