Be certain to take in candidate forums next week

Don’t like the city’s decisions regarding Blu on Broadway?

Not a fan of a new city hall in a downtown Minot bank?

Got a beef with Minot Public Schools or the Minot Park District?

Perhaps none of the above.

Still, anybody qualified to vote in the city should pay special attention to the candidate forums being held online and on a local cable television channel next week.

The Minot Area Chamber of Commerce Governmental Affairs Committee will sponsor three candidate forums this month with help from the City of Minot, which will host the forums in City Hall council chambers.

The forums will be held without an in-person audience and will be broadcast live over the chamber and city Facebook pages, along with Channel 19.

May 12 will feature the five candidates running for two seats on the Minot Park Board. The May 13 forum will feature the six Minot School Board candidates running for three open seats. On May 14, the five Minot City Council candidates will be featured. There are three seats up for re-election on the council.

All forums will begin at 6 p.m. and end at 7:30 p.m. Minot Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors Chairman Tom Rafferty will moderate the school board forum while Chamber Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Mark Lyman will moderate the park board and city council forums.

If you have questions for any of the candidates you can submit them via email until the time of the events at chamber@minotchamber.org. Questions also will be taken via Facebook the night of the forums as well.

The city elections are being held June 9 in conjunction with the state’s primary election.

With a healthy mix of incumbents and newcomers on the ballot, each forum promises to be very interesting to concerned residents. Hopefully the discussion will be “spirited.”

The City, Chamber and all of the people involved are to be commended for putting on the forums. If nothing else, viewers will come away more informed about those candidates who are new to them.
