Lots of fuel outdoors for major fires
Warmer temps and relentless wind might be a reminder that it is spring in North Dakota. We’d like you also to be reminded of the fire danger those same conditions present.
Yes, it’s getting more pleasant outdoors. A little yardwork is getting done and some people have fired up their grills a few times already. Thankfully, we have not heard of any major grass or structure fires caused by outdoor grilling, although there have been some very serious – and sad – situations involving fire recently.
Out in the countryside, especially, there is an extremely large amount of fuel for potentially catastrophic fires. Given that, we should all be very mindful of the actions we take that could ignite a fire unintentionally.
Intentionally-set fires; be even more cautious, and considerate of others’ property downwind from you. Also consider the men and women who might have to come put out a fire that you were responsible for controlling.
Various counties in our area have already implemented burn ban policies, including Ward County.
The Ward County Commission passed a burn declaration Tuesday at the request of Minot Rural Fire Chief Rex Weltikol. The declaration also has the support of other rural fire chiefs.
Under the policy, burning would be restricted during periods of high risk of fire spread. Weltikol said the next three weeks are expected to be critical because of dry conditions.
Who knows how long those conditions will exist. There can still be serious cause for concern after it starts to green up outside.
Residents can obtain the latest fire index to determine whether to burn by calling Minot Central Dispatch at 852-0111. The index also is to be posted on various websites, including those of Minot Rural and Ward County Emergency Management. It typically is posted outside the Minot Rural Fire Department at 400 31st Ave. SW.
Again, please heed the warnings no matter how long these dry conditions last. Consider this; accidents do happen, but most are avoidable. Perhaps by your careful attention.
