Aviation camps a sure benefit for young people

In an era in which so many young people spend most of their free time glued to tiny screens, playing video games and other questionably enriching activities, a hands-on camp deeply entrenched in the STEM disciplines is deeply laudable.

Such are the ACE Aviation Camp, a three-hour program for third- and fourth-graders, and PACE Aviation Camp, a five-session program for fifth- and sixth-graders. (PACE stands for Passport Aviation Experience and ACE stands for Aviation Camp Experience.)

The programs of the Dakota Territory Air Museum take place at different times of the year. ACE generally operates on Saturdays in February and March. PACE is a weeklong camp in the summer. Participants of both camps are divided into teams and experience hands-on activities on aviation topics. About 30 kids take part in each camp. Camps are held at the air museum except one day of PACE camp is held at Minot High School-Magic City Campus.

Activities range from hearing from some of history’s most famous aviators (portrayed by aviation mentors), get to explore historical and general aviation aircraft, an opportunity to earn an introductory flight and much more.

The camps are an enthralling opportunity for students who want to explore aviation in high school and as adults – those with the commitment, knowledge and skill.

ACE and PACE are benefits to the community and to the young people who enjoy them.

Thanks are due to the Dakota Territory Air Museum and all those who make these special camp experiences available.
