Local election contests: the more the merrier

Just a couple of weeks ago, Minot Daily News hailed the decision of two candidates to engage in a GOP primary contest despite their not having been endorsed by the party. More competition is always better in bringing forth ideas, highlighting policy variations and keeping whatever candidates end up victorious sharp in being able to defend thier positions.

Now, a score of candidates have qualified to run for various offices in Minot and in Ward County as well. Competition looks like it will be fairly brisk and voters will be tasked with studying a range of candidates in order to make their ballot most impactful.

Three candidates have filed to run for Minot mayor. Another six candidates are vying for three open positions on the Minot City Council, and two people are seeking the municipal judgeship.

Ward County voters will have a race for sheriff in the primary and general elections this year. They also will have a choice for state’s attorney and county commissioner in November. Four people have filed to run for the Minot Public School Board for two available seats. Seven people have filed for two open positions on the Minot Park Board.

It’s not a cavalcade of candidates, but it is a good number and offers options across the board.

Congratulations to all of the candidates in each race. It is a healthy sign for Minot to witness so many people willing to take up the cause of public service, particularly given the challenges presented by the economic realities of today and the foreseeable future.

Voters are encouraged to get to know all candidates, hear their ideas… and to challenge them to defend their positions. Only then can the best, most informed decisions be made.

Election season is starting off well, with competition in each race. This benefits the city, county and voters in both.
