Now millennials need to get in the game

Among the many lessons so far from the presidential campaign is that millennials continue to be an important factor in elections. Sen. Bernie Sanders insurgent campaign is almost entirely based on support from millennials and Donald Trump’s unprecedented effort is also benefiting from millennial support and that of other new voters. Furthermore, other candidates are speaking to millennial issues and attempting to engage the largest generational block of voters in various ways.

This reality leaves two things to ponder.

One is whether or not millennials will exert the power from numbers they have by actually voting in this cycle. This will be determined easily enough by statistics as the election progresses.

Secondly, though, is to wonder whether the millennials will choose to get in the game or continue to sit on the sidelines.

It’s easy to complain and demand. It is much harder to get involved. It is easy to follow someone making promises of change. It is difficult to become an agent of change oneself.

In Minot and other communities, there are too few young faces in service clubs, leadership organizations, and volunteer and political circles. This is a shame, because young people have the energy and imagination to assist organizations and improve their communities.

Millennials should become engaged in society and in their community. Besides making the world a better place, they will find that navigating the space between protester and participant builds character and expands one’s understanding of how society operates.
