Nancy Lou Hemstad, 84, of Stanley, ND, passed away on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at the Mountrail Bethel Home in Stanley, ND.
Nancy was born on July 29, 1942, in Oklahoma, the only child of Cecil and Nancy Sylvester. During high school, she moved with her parents from Okmulgee, Oklahoma, to Fargo, North Dakota, where she met the love of her life, Curt Hemstad.
Nancy and Curt were married on October 31, 1959, and raised three children: Craig, Jennifer, and Leif. After living in St. Louis, Mo, Minot and Carrington, ND, they settled in Stanley in 1967. There, they farmed until 2005 and retired.
Nancy overcame cancer twice in the 1980s and 1990s. While devoted to her family as a farm wife, mother, and homemaker, she also worked as a baker, telemarketer, and flower shop assistant.
She found joy in Red Hatters, and in making the farmstead bloom each summer. In later years, quilting at American Lutheran Church in Stanley and Friday lunches at the Stanley Golden Age Club brought her many cherished friendships.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Cecil and Nancy Sylvester, her beloved cat, Charlie, and her husband, Curt. She is survived by her son, Craig (Angela) Hemstad of Glenburn, ND; daughter, Jennifer (Kermit) Hollinger of Renton, WA; son, Leif (Anne) Hemstad of Austin, TX; eight grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
