Carol Hanson, 87, Clarkdale, AZ, formerly of Berthold, ND, died Monday, October 26, 2026 in a Phoenix, AZ care facility.
Carol Lee was born on June 11, 1939, the second of seven children born to John and Marion (Wixer) Lee. She grew up in the Berthold, North Dakota area, where she spent her formative years surrounded by a large, loving family. Carol attended local schools and graduated from Berthold High School with the class of 1957.
Carol was once married to Darrell E. Borud; they were blessed with sons Kevin and Blaine. Together they cherished time spent at the family cabin at Van Hook, North Dakota. She later found beautiful companionship and love in her marriage to Bud Hanson. Following Bud’s passing, Carol continued to carry his memory in her heart, eventually finding a renewed joy for life alongside her partner, James Mason.
Carol's life was deeply enriched by her passion for education. She spent her career shaping young minds as an exemplary first-grade teacher, serving with dedication in Noonan, Kenmare, and Des Lacs-Burlington. Carol brought extraordinary warmth to her classroom, creating an environment where her students could thrive. She truly loved her work, leaving a legacy through the generations of children she taught.
Carol shared many beautiful years and unforgettable adventures with James. Together, they embraced a vibrant life, in the warm desert sun of Arizona. In addition, Carol gave her time to her community as the bookkeeper and manager at the Clarkdale VFW Club -- a position that brought her immense joy and fulfillment.
Carol is survived by: Son Kevin (Renae) Borud; Grandchildren: Roger Borud, Matt (Jessilynn) Borud, Kristy Borud; Great-grandchildren: Brynlee, Shaylee, Daxsen, Jaxxlyn, and Stryker; Siblings: Paul (Linda) Lee, Alan (Terrie) Lee, Richard (Sandie) Lee, Philip (Sherry) Lee, Gordon (Wallyn) Lee, Ervin (Carrie) Lee; longtime Companion James Mason; Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents and a son Blaine.
Memorials in honor of Carol may be given to the donor’s choice.
Visitation: Monday, November 2, 2026 one hour prior to the service at Zion Lutheran Church, Berthold, ND.
Memorial Service: Monday, November 2, 2026 at 11 am at Zion Lutheran Church, Berthold, ND.
Burial: A private family committal service will take place.
