Arnie was born on May 27, 1950, in Harvey, North Dakota, the son of August and Elizabeth (Held) Selzler. He grew up near Anamoose and graduated from Anamoose High School in 1968. After graduation, he attended college in Wahpeton before entering the United States Army on February 12, 1969. He served in Vietnam, receiving the Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, and Combat Infantryman Badge, and was honorably discharged on February 11, 1971. His commitment to military service continued through the North Dakota National Guard, where he served an additional 21 years, 6 months, and 28 days. In 2024, Arnie proudly participated in the Honor Flight with his son, Scott.

Following his military service, Arnie returned to Anamoose and married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Wohl, on October 1, 1971. The couple first lived in Carrington before making their home in Harvey, where they built a life together and raised their family. Arnie built his career in the lumber and construction industry where he was an incredible salesman and loved by his customers before retiring in 2010. In addition to his work in the construction field, Arnie and Nancy, along with his brother Woody and sister-in-law Kathy, built a successful storage business, 4 Season Storage.

Throughout his life, Arnie had a deep appreciation for the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trap shooting, and especially cherished time spent at Devils Lake, where he loved taking the pontoon out for a cruise on warm summer days. Arnie and Nancy enjoyed traveling together, spending some winters in Arizona and visiting destinations that included Europe, Alaska, Seattle, and Florida.

One of Arnie’s passions was military aviation and history. While wintering in Arizona, he served as a docent at the Commemorative Air Force Museum, specializing in the B-17 and B-25 aircraft. He also enjoyed attending air shows with family and friends and looked forward to Selzler family reunions held during the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion in Rollag. Closer to home, he enjoyed hosting card nights, gathering with fellow Vietnam veterans, and spending time with family and friends.

Arnie’s commitment to serving others extended well beyond his military service. He was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church, where he served on the church council. He was also active in numerous civic and community organizations, including the Harvey Volunteer Fire Department, the Harvey and Anamoose Wildlife Clubs, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, and the local Trapshooting Club. He served as president of the Harvey Lions Club, drove bus for Harvey Public Schools, served on the Wells County Commission, and was currently serving on the Harvey City Council. In addition, he was an active participant with Community Action Region VI.

Above all else, Arnie’s greatest joy was his family. He possessed a strong faith and deeply loved his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandson. Every morning, Arnie could be found in his rocking chair praying a rosary. Whether sharing stories, traveling, attending family gatherings, or supporting the activities of his grandchildren, Arnie treasured every opportunity to spend time with those he loved.

Arnie is survived by his wife Nancy of 55 years, son Scott (Paula), and daughter Heidi (Dan). Grandchildren: Megan (Spencer) Brandt, Elle (Aaron) Ochsner, Cadence Selzler-Campion, Lucas Selzler, Liv Bahr, Beckett Meyer and great grandson Banner Ochsner as well as siblings Virginia, Victorina, and August Jr.

He is preceded in death by his parents, August and Elizabeth, siblings Albert, Edith, Leonard, Helen, Steve, Ray, Daniel, and Aloysius.
