Wallace "Wally" Anders Aannerud passed away peacefully on September 20, 2026 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. While his family's hearts are heavy with loss, they find comfort in the countless memories, laughter, and love he shared throughout his 81 years.
Wally was born on August 4, 1945, in Minot, North Dakota to Anders and Alma (Tostenson) Aannerud. He grew up on the family farm near Voltaire, where he learned the values of hard work, humility and helping others. Those early years spent alongside his parents and his uncle, William Tostenson, remained some of his fondest memories and shaped the man he would become.
On September 30, 1966, Wally married the love of his life, Sharon Kaye Anhorn. Together they built a beautiful life rooted in faith, family and unwavering devotion to one another. Their marriage of 53 years was a true partnership filled with love, laughter and countless cherished moments. The day being so special to everyone that their granddaughter chose it for her wedding day. Together they raised three sons, Todd, Terry and Troy, who were the pride of their lives. Wally dedicated 39 years of service to Verendrye Electric before retiring in 2004. Retirement opened the door to many of the things he loved the most. He spent countless happy hours building and flying model airplanes, lending a hand on the Walsh family farm and enjoying the company of family and friends. He was described as a "mildly reliable helper", a phrase that perfectly captured his humor and never failed to bring a smile to those around him.
Nothing brought Wally more joy than his family. Alongside Sharon, he faithfully attended games, school programs, concerts and milestones in between. Whether cheering from the stands, offering encouragement from the sidelines or simply being present Wally's love and support were constant gifts to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was known best as Papa. His family will forever treasure those moments.
Wally is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sharon, on March 20, 2020. Though losing her left an emptiness in his life, his love for Sharon never faded. Those who knew him could see that she remained close to his heart every day.
Wally is survived by his sons, Todd (Carla) Aannerud and their children, Gauge Aannerud, Hannah Cockrell, Lachlan Cockrell and great-grandson Elias Cockrell; Terry (Heidi) Aannerud and their children, Presley (Seth) Weber and great-grandson, Arlo Anders Weber, Sam (Chloe) Aannerud and great-granddaughter, Marley Anders Aannerud, Griffen Aannerud and Troy (Shannon) Aannerud.
He also leaves behind many extended family members, dear friends and neighbors whose lives were enriched by his kindness, gentle spirit, quick wit and steady presence.
The family of Wally wishes to express their profound appreciation for the overwhelming love, prayers, and support shown during this time of loss. We extend a very special thank you to Susanna, Amanda, Lakenna and the entire staff at Edgewood Assisted Living Facility for creating a warm, supportive home for him. We are also deeply grateful to Shandel, his dedicated nurse from HIA Hospice, and to Torie and the staff at Cornerstone for their compassionate caregiving. Your unwavering dedication, gentle kindness, and professional support provided immense comfort for Wally and our family during his journey. May God bless each of you.
Private Family Graveside Service: Wally will be laid to rest beside his beloved Sharon on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
Public Visitation: Friday from 3 to 4 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to HIA Hospice, Cornerstone Caregiving or Edgewood Assisted Living Facility.
