Howard Borstad, of Harvey, North Dakota, formerly of Tioga, North Dakota passed away peacefully on September 27, 2026, at the St. Aloisius Nursing Home of Harvey, joining his beloved wife, Sandra, on what would have been their 63rd wedding anniversary.
Funeral services will be held at the Faith Lutheran Church of Harvey on Friday, October 2, 2026 at 11:00 a.m.
Visitation will be held at the Hertz Funeral Home of Harvey on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Prayer service will be on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will be in the United Cemetery in Tioga, North Dakota at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2026.
Howard was born on August 10, 1940, in Williston, North Dakota, to Harold and Lillian Borstad. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, raised on the family farm, and graduated from Tioga High School in 1958.
Following high school, Howard enlisted in the National Guard and completed his active duty at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. During his reserve service, he was recalled to active duty in 1961 during the Berlin Crisis. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1962.
After his military service, Howard managed a horse ranch in Minnesota, where he successfully showed horses throughout a four-state area. It was during this time, in a small grocery store, that he met his future wife, Sandra Osmundson. In the fall of 1963, Howard and Sandra were married in a small country church in Averill, Minnesota.
In 1966, Howard attended Missouri Auction School in Kansas City, Missouri, beginning a career as an outstanding auctioneer that would become an important part of his life for many years.
In 1968, Howard began working for Standard Oil Company in Horace, North Dakota. He later transferred to McGregor and then to Powers Lake, where he and Sandra raised their family. In 1985, following the death of his father, Howard purchased the family farm.
In his younger years, if you wanted to find Howard, chances were you would find him on the back of a horse. His love of horses continued throughout his entire life. Horses were not simply a hobby for Howard; they were a lifelong passion and a meaningful part of who he was.
Howard and Sandi were married for 48 years and raised four daughters: Michelle, Kay, Kim, and Tami. One of Howard's greatest pleasures was watching his daughters and grandchildren participate in high school and college sports. He was a proud father and grandfather who cherished supporting his family and celebrating their accomplishments.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Lillian Borstad; his wife, Sandra; his sister, Estelle; his grandson, Tate; and brothers-in-law, Ken Silha and Steve Knudson.
He is survived by his daughters, Michelle Borstad of Havre, Montana; Kay (Jeff) Bornong of Harlowton, Montana; Kim (Scott) Nitz of Harvey, North Dakota; and Tami (Reed) Kirby of Williston, North Dakota. He is also survived by his sisters, Julie Silha of Bowan, North Dakota, and Carol Anderson of Spokane, Washington; grandchildren, Josh (Jess) Vedaa, Brooke (Jarek) Hansen, Alecia (Nick) Dahlquist, Lynze (Jacob) Martin, Taylee Bornong, Walker Koropatnicki, and Tucker Bornong; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Howard leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a family who loved him dearly. His legacy of hard work, devotion to family, love of horses, and pride in those he loved will live on through the generations.
