Daniel Joseph Mahoney, 76, Minot, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, August 27, 2026, following a medical emergency while driving near Garrison, North Dakota.
Daniel was born April 5, 1950, in Minot, North Dakota, the son of Robert and Joan (Erb) Mahoney. He was raised with a strong appreciation for family, hard work, and helping others -- values that remained an important part of who he was throughout his life.
On August 12, 1999, Daniel married Nancy Thompson. Together, they built a life filled with love, companionship, adventure, and many treasured memories. Dan and Nancy especially enjoyed riding motorcycles and traveling together. He was Nancy’s greatest supporter and encouraged her to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse, proudly standing beside her as she returned to college and earned her RN degree and nursing license.
Above all else, Dan was a devoted family man. He loved his family unconditionally and took great pride in the lives and accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. When his children were young, Dan could always be found supporting them in whatever sport, activity, or interest they chose to pursue. As the years passed, that same pride and encouragement extended to his grandchildren, who held a very special place in his heart.
Dan had a lifelong love for the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Some of his favorite memories were made in the early morning hours, especially when he would wake Bob before daylight and convince him it was time to head out hunting. More than simply enjoying the outdoors himself, Dan took great pride in passing on those traditions. He taught his children and grandchildren how to hunt and fish, while always emphasizing the importance of firearm safety and respect for the outdoors. Those lessons, along with the memories created beside him, will continue to be carried forward for generations.
Dan will also be remembered for his generous heart and his willingness to help others. He truly was the kind of man who would give someone the shirt off his back. Whether family, friend, or someone simply in need of a hand, Dan could be counted on. If something needed to be fixed, done, figured out, or someone simply needed help, he was there. He gave freely of his time and talents and never hesitated to lend a helping hand.
Those who knew Dan will remember a man who loved deeply, gave generously, and took tremendous pride in his family. His presence will be deeply missed, but the lessons he taught, the traditions he passed down, and the countless memories he created will remain with those who loved him.
Dan leaves to cherish his loving memory his wife, Nancy; son, Robert "Bob" Mahoney (Samantha); daughters, Heather Mahoney, Jennifer Forbes (Jeff), and Tylo Mahoney; daughters at heart, Alaynee Thompson and Alexis Craig; mother, Joan Mahoney; sisters, Renee Zerr (Jerry) and Darla Butler (Mike); grandchildren, Emerson Forbes, Carter Kaul, Cadence Mahoney, Owen Mahoney, Camilla Mahoney, Benjamin Mahoney, Samiarah Armstrong, Temperance Armstrong, Lucius Pacheco, and Troy Waldo; one grandchild on the way; along with many other family members and friends whose lives were touched by Dan.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Mahoney, and his sister, Colleen Mahoney.
Celebration of Life: Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
In accordance with Daniel’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no reviewal.
