Carey Lynn Ziegler, 67, Karlsruhe, ND, passed away Tuesday, September 22, 2026, from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident near Velva.
Carey was born January 6, 1959, the son of Joe and Virginia (Bichler) Ziegler, the third of six children, in Minot. He was raised on the family farm and graduated from Karlsruhe Public School in 1978. Following graduation, Carey enlisted in the Army National Guard. After proudly serving his country, he attended the North Dakota State College of Science, where he earned a plumbing certificate in 1984.
Carey briefly worked in the North Dakota oil fields before joining the Minnesota Local Laborers 563 Union in January 1985. Carey's work involved working at the Xcel Nuclear Plant (now Xcel Energy), refineries, and coal-fired power plants. Although his work took him away from North Dakota, Carey remained connected to his roots and the place he called home.
Upon retiring in June 2014, Carey returned to Karlsruhe and purchased the family farmstead. He took pride in caring for the property and spent his retirement years fixing, maintaining, and improving every building on the farm. Carey was known throughout the neighborhood as the handyman and "watchman." He was always willing to lend a helping hand to family, friends, and neighbors. His willingness to help others and his quiet, caring nature left a lasting impression on those around him.
Carey enjoyed reading, traveling, hunting, and spending time visiting with relatives and friends. He had a compassionate nature and was especially attentive to those who were ill or in need. He cherished weekly visits with his mother at the Harvey nursing home, making those visits an important part of both of their lives.
His loving family includes: mother, Virginia Ziegler-Ripplinger, Harvey; siblings, Claudette (Tony) Selzler, Velva, Calvin Ziegler St. Augusta, MN, Carlyn (John) Dakutak, Minot, Connie Ziegler, Phoenix, AZ, Clarae Ziegler (Tom Kraft), Bismarck; stepbrothers, Monte (Diane) Ripplinger, Rogers, MN, Leon Ripplinger, Kelseyville, CA; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Ziegler; stepfather, John B. Ripplinger; stepbrother and sister-in-law Claude (Vicki) Ripplinger; his grandparents, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and his nephew-in-law, Donnie Lundy.
Mass of Christian Burial: Thursday, October 1, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Karlsruhe.
Interment: Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Karlsruhe, ND.
Visitation: One hour prior to the service at the church.
