Garrison
Raymond Doyle Koenig, 100, of Garrison, passed away on July 27, 2026, in Garrison.
A service celebrating a life well lived will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at the Garrison City Auditorium, Garrison, ND.
Doyle was born on November 30, 1925, in Underwood, ND to Fred and Bertha (Harris) Koenig. He was raised in Underwood with his seven siblings. Doyle graduated early from Underwood High School, and immediately enlisted in the US Navy. He was honorably discharged in September 1944.
Returning to Underwood, Doyle worked at the local lumberyard with his father. His success in the retail lumber business allowed him to advance his career with Great Plains Supply Lumber Company eventually becoming a regional manager. Retiring at 58, Doyle enjoyed more years of retirement than years of employment.
Doyle met the love of his life Patricia Crank at a dance in Garrison. In 1949, Doyle and Pat married and together they raised their three children in White Bear Lake, Minnesota and Minot, North Dakota. After his retirement, he and Pat established their forever home in Garrison, North Dakota, on Hideaway Bay, Lake Sakakawea.
Doyle had a passion for hunting and fishing. He enjoyed doing both, accompanied by family and friends. Doyle was a long time supporter of Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited, recently a volunteer guide with the local Wounded Warriors group. His last hunt was in the fall of 2025 with his son and grandson. He also enjoyed chopping wood to heat his home, his favorite saying was "a man who heats with wood is twice warmed".
Doyle was a man of great faith and sincerely kind to everyone he met. His love for family was unwavering. His community of neighbors were a lifeline for both Doyle and those who kept his social calendar full. He continued to play poker every Monday night up to 3 weeks prior to his passing. He was a forward thinker, patriot and conservationist.
Doyle is survived by his children: Barbara Koenig, Laurie (Cary) Bauer, Charles (Cindy) Koenig; grandchildren: Adam Byorum (Allie), Nick Byorum, Megan (Evan) Burch, JD Bauer, Matthew (Amanda) Bauer, Caitlin (Brian) Klekner, Grant (Rebekah) Koenig; great-grandchildren: Nic Wildemuth, Domenica Byorum, Donavon Johnson, Nikkita Byorum, Kyle Wildemuth, Zack Wildemuth, Jaiden Byorum, Jennavive Byorum, Henry Byorum, Jordan Bauer, Isabelle Bauer, Knox Bauer, Nash Bauer, Townes Klekner, Deke Klekner, Joey Koenig, Leni Koenig; great-great-grandchildren: Athena Byorum, Riley Johnson.
Doyle was preceded in death by the love of his life: Pat; parents; siblings: Mildred, Emerald, LeRoy, Lois, Melvin, Lillian, Enid.
