Luilla Lusty

Luilla Annette Lusty, 95, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Aug. 9, 2026, with family by her side at Edgewood Vista Assisted Living Center in Minot. Luilla (Lu) was born in Hoople, to Lucy (Swanberg) and Malcolm McLennan on Dec. 31, 1930.

She was raised in Hoople and graduated from Hoople High School in 1948. After graduation she attended Concordia College and Mayville State College, graduating with an Associate Degree of Education. Her first teaching position was in Aneta, as an elementary teacher.

While in Aneta, Lu met her future husband Gene Lusty. They were married June 22, 1952, in Hoople. After marriage, they settled in Drayton, where they enjoyed raising their two daughters, Dawn and Lori.

While in Drayton, Lu began teaching again and continued teaching the sixth grade for over 30 years. Lu finished her education during the summers at the University of North Dakota, earning her bachelor's and master's degrees.

After retirement, Gene and Lu began traveling south to Texas each winter and eventually resettled full-time in the Rio Grand Valley. Following Gene's passing in 2020, Lu moved back to North Dakota to be closer to family.

Family: Lu is survived by her daughters, Dawn (Greg) Barnard, of Keenesburg, Colo., and Lori (Mark) Scharmer, of Mohall; five grandchildren, Melissa (Paul) Loveday, Calne, England, Valerie (Phil) McClure, Wichita Falls, Texas, Derek (Emily) Barnard, Denver, Colo., Aimee (Mark) Wilson, Roseau, Minn., Drew (Kelsey) Scharmer, Minot; nine great-grandchildren, Tyler, Mason, Logan, Lila, Violet, Max, Bryn, Gabriel and Harper.

Lu was preceded in death by: Her husband, Gene Lusty; her parents, Lucy Baeske and Malcolm McLennan; sisters, Williamine Zuelsdorf and Eugenia Rutherford; brother, Donald McLennan; and grandson, Noah Loveday.
