Vera Hoffman
April 17, 1932-April 25, 2026
Grove City, Ohio
Vera Alice Hoffman, née Schutz, of Grove City, Ohio, formerly of Minot, North Dakota, passed away at home while surrounded by loving family on Saturday, April 25, 2026.
Vera was born April 17, 1932, the daughter of German immigrants Adolph Schutz and J. Helene Schutz, née Schnabel. She was born the youngest of seven siblings in Columbus, ND. She was raised and educated in Columbus and worked an after-school job at the local grocery store. She graduated from Columbus High School in 1950 and went on to graduate from business college in Minot. She was employed at Union National Bank in the loan department and later at St. Joseph’s Hospital in the accounting department.
Vera met her husband, Ralph, through mutual friends, and they were married on November 25, 1956, in a ceremony at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Minot. The couple bought their first home, a little pink two-bedroom ranch-style, in northwest Minot. They brought their two children up in that home until they later moved to a home built with sweat equity in rural Minot. Their Christian faith was the foundation of the family and home. The family faithfully attended Grace Baptist Church and later Our Redeemer’s Church in Minot. Ralph and Vera were married 32 years when Ralph was tragically killed in a railroad accident in 1989.
Vera moved to Ohio in 2016 to be near her family, who were blessed to be able to enjoy many family events with her. Three generations enjoyed her company, including playing board games with her, eating ice cream treats with her, and loving on her.
Vera enjoyed doing art projects and listening to the musical entertainment at her assisted living home. Her great-grandchildren called her G.G. and enjoyed all the holidays they spent with her, the games they played with her, and pushing her in her wheelchair on outdoor walks together.
Many of the nurses, aides, and therapists at her assisted living home have expressed their admiration and love for her. Vera’s children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren loved her dearly. Her Christian faith, strength, resolve, tenacity, and love of feeding them amazing baked good, especially her legendary caramel rolls, will be some of their treasured memories of her.
Vera was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph; parents, Adolph and J. Helene; and siblings, Herbert, Erwin, Harry, Gordon, Edith, and Erna.
She is survived by her children, Lola (John) Smith and Rodney (Kandice) Hoffman; her grandchildren, Zachary (Megan) Smith, Mara (Richard) Braun, Jayce Smith, Andrew Hoffman, Autumn Hoffman, and Aaron Hoffman; her great-grandchildren, Izzy, Titus, and Emmy Braun; and her nieces and nephews.
