John Leroy Merck, 83, passed away at home on April 27, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, dedication, and deep love for his family.
John was born on May 19, 1942, in Minot, North Dakota, to John C. Merck and Anna Leier Merck. He grew up on the family farm in Karlsruhe, where he developed a strong work ethic that would define his life. John graduated from Karlsruhe High School in 1960.
John enlisted in the United States Army Reserve. During his 6 years of service, he was active duty from 1966-1967. He was honorably discharged in 1967.
On October 28, 1967, John was united in marriage to the love of his life, Claudette Haga. Together they made their home in Velva and were blessed with twin sons. John and Claudette shared 55 years of marriage.
John worked for many years as a skilled bricklayer and later co-owned the Fireplace Shop, where he took great pride in his craftsmanship. He was a member of Saint Cecilia Catholic Church. John was an active volunteer and member of many community and church groups.
John was a man who valued hard work and time well spent. He found quiet satisfaction in tending his yard, garden, and being with his family. He was a skilled Yahtzee player and created many special memories playing with his grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Claudette, his brothers, James, Francis, Daniel and Andrew; and nephew, Daniel Haga.
John is survived by sons Michael Merck of Hazen and Mark (Sara) Merck of Hillsboro, ND; step grandson Landen Mosbrucker and granddaughters Addyson and Avery Merck. Sisters Agnes, Mary, and Evelyn; his brothers Loy and Leonard; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Todd and Debra Haga; his niece Lindsey (Matthew) Benson and their children Graham and Elise of Velva, ND and nephew Darren (Britney) Haga and their sons Calvin and Reese of Hazen, ND; along with extended family.
John will be remembered for his steady strength, and the love he showed his family throughout his life.
Visitation: Thursday, May 14, 2026, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Velva. Rosary/Vigil Service: Thursday, May 14, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Velva. Mass of Christian Burial: Friday, May 15, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church Velva. Inurnment will take place at the Velva Cemetery.
