Ilene Barbara Mattern, the daughter of Sebastian and Kathrine (Kurtz) Black was born on October 4, 1944 in Rugby North Dakota. She died with family by her side on Thursday, April 30, 2026 at the Heart of America Living Center in Rugby, North Dakota. On May 18, 1963 she married the love of her life, Claytus Mattern, at St. Anselm’s Catholic Church in Fulda. Ilene is survived by her four sons, Vince (Dana) and Lawrence (Debbie) of Rugby, Steven (Vita) of Barton, and LeRoy of Willow City; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Linda Polanchek of Dickinson and Joan (Virgil) Voeller of Mandan and one brother, Mike (Deb) Black of Rugby. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 7 at Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with rosary, vigil prayer service and sharing of memories beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Rugby. Visitation will continue on Thursday from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home with no viewing at the church.
