Bonnie Brekke, 88, Voltaire and formerly of Minot passed away peacefully on Monday, May 25, 2026 in a Minot hospital from complications related to pneumonia surrounded by her loving family.
Bonnie Adelgunde Schook was born on April 25, 1938 in Minot, ND to Myron and Lydia (Schoenwald) Shook. She was raised on a farm near Voltaire, attended elementary school in Voltaire and graduated from Velva High School in 1956. She attended NDSU for a short time prior to marrying Severin Brekke on July 28, 1957 at Oak Valley Lutheran Church in Velva. They made their home in Minot where Bonnie was employed in the Souris River Telephone Billing Department. She established First Lutheran Church Daycare, Minot’s first daycare, in 1970 and operated that entity for twelve years. She served as the receptionist for Dr. Lowell Cheney’s dental office as well as actively farming the family farm since 1973.
Bonnie was a longtime active member of First Lutheran Church – Minot where she participated in the Altar Guild, WELCA and the Fair Stand. She was an active volunteer of the Norsk Hostfest for many years.
Bonnie wore many hats throughout her life. If she wasn’t in the kitchen preparing meals for her family, she was baking something sweet for anyone with a sweet tooth. She could often be found outside mowing the lawn, working in the yard or caring for the farmstead she loved so much. Bonnie also enjoyed making her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren Christmas stockings and beautiful Christmas tree skirts.
Bonnie’s loving family includes her husband of 68 years: Severin; children: Bruce (Brenda) Brekke of Columbus, Ohio and Brenda (Monty) Lee of Minot.
