Chris Berentson, a man of service, 40, Minot, ND, passed away Friday, February 27, 2026, at Sanford Hospital in Bismarck, ND

Christopher “Chris” Berentson was born January 3, 1986, the son of Terry and Marla (Dailey) Berentson, in Minot. He was raised and educated in Mohall, graduating in 2004.

Chris attended the Peace Officer Training Program at Lake Region State College in Devils Lake. He worked for the Ward County Sheriff’s Department for 10 years. He also was on the Minot SWAT team and a volunteer with the Minot Rural Fire Department. Chris always had a servant’s heart. He was incredibly compassionate and had a passion for helping others.

Chris enlisted in the North Dakota Army National Guard in 2003 with Alpha Company 164th Engineer Battalion. He completed initial active-duty training in 2004 as a 12B combat engineer. He deployed in 2005-2006 with Alpha Company 164th Engineer Battalion to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. From 2010 to 2012 he served on active duty as the Military Funeral Honors team leader in Devils Lake, North Dakota. He deployed with the 818th Engineer Company in 2012-2013 to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He was currently assigned to the 164th Regional Training Institute as the officer candidate platoon trainer. MSG Berentson had over 22 years of service.

He married Terri Rubbert on December 27, 2020, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in rural Upham, ND. They made their home in Minot and were blessed with a son, Evan. Chris was a wonderful dad who could get the best giggles from Evan and even Terri as she watched them play.

Chris was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Mohall and later attended St. Mark’s Lutheran Church.

He enjoyed staying active by playing softball and hockey. He liked spending time outdoors, hunting and hiking.

Chris was not only intelligent, but he was also someone who loved to share his knowledge with others. He was always teaching others and if he didn’t know the answer, he’d research to find it.

Chris will be remembered for his quick wit and playful smile, his charismatic personality that made everyone around him feel special, and his compassion for those around him. He will be deeply missed by all who loved him.

His loving family includes: wife of 5 years, Terri; son, Evan; parents, Terry and Marla Berentson; paternal grandmother, Erna Berentson; siblings, Betsy (Dustin) Myaer, Heather (Jason) Thompson, Remington (Karly) Berentson; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jan and Laurie Rubbert; grandmother-in-law, Jeanette Stevenson; brothers-in-law, Aaron (Kate) Rubbert, Tyler (Taylor) Rubbert; nieces and nephews, Mayson Myaer, Avery and Waylon Thompson, Eleanor and Arlo Berentson, Henley, Declan, Josie, and Isaac Rubbert, Euphemia and Desmond Rubbert; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Tony Berentson; maternal grandparents, Deloris R. and William J. Dailey.

Funeral: Saturday, March 7, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Minot.

Interment: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND.

Visitation: Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Memorials: are preferred to an organization that supports the mental health of soldiers and law enforcement or to the Fund for the Future of Evan at Town and Country Credit Union, Minot.
