Barbara (Barb) Jean Hjermstad, 83 died March 19, 2026, in her home after a long battle with heart and kidney disease.

Barb was born August 17, 1942, to Earl and Hazel (Peterson) Wegener. Barb graduated from Minot High School in 1960 and went on to work at Trinity Hospital in medical records. She was baptized, confirmed and married at Bethany Lutheran Church in Minot, ND.

Barb married Douglas D. Hjermstad on July 7, 1961. She enjoyed traveling with him by car and plane to different racetracks. In 1970 their son Mark was born. Douglas’s racing career ended tragically in 1976, and Barb went on to raise their cherished son Mark as a widow.

Barb worked hard in her 37-year career, where she met so many people and developed wonderful friendships.

Barb was an amazing mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother. Her grandsons Brandon and Douglas were such an important part of her life; she was grateful for all time she could spend with them. Watching them grow up, attending many sporting events, cook outs and drop in visits was always a cherished time.

Her patio was her favorite place to spend time, filling it with flowers, reading, sunbathing, grilling, and visiting with family and friends. Her wonderful neighbors and friends meant the world to her. Barb will be so dearly missed.

Barb was preceded in death by her late husband, mother, father, sister, Diane Aafedt; niece, Tanya Kippen; aunts, Inez Serr, Minot, ND, Helma Brant, Minot, ND; uncle, Jerry Peterson; and cousins, Michael Serr, Merrill Serr, and Wesley Brant.

Barb is survived by her son Mark (Mary) Hjermstad, Moorhead, MN; grandsons, Brandon Hjermstad, Moorhead, MN and Douglas Hjermstad, Moorhead, MN; nieces, Beth (John) Kay Witchita, KS and Samantha (Jeff) Westberg, Fargo, ND; cousins, Jenell Serr, Minot, ND, Russell Brant, Minot, ND, and Nicole DeCoteau, Minot, ND.

Visitation will be Tuesday, March 24, from 10:00 – 11:00 AM, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 AM, in The Lutheran Church of Christ the King, Moorhead, MN.

Interment will be Friday, March 27, at 1:00 PM, at Rosehill Memorial Cemetery, Minot, ND.
