Herman “Bud” Tryhus

June 17, 1929-Feb. 23, 2026

Minot

Herman “Bud” Tryhus, 96, Minot and formerly of the South Prairie area died on Monday, February 23, 2026 in a Minot hospital.

Herman Leroy “Bud” Tryhus was born on June 17, 1929 in Minot to Oscar and Anna (Pederson) Tryhus. He was raised and educated in Tatman and Eureka Townships as well as in Surrey and Minot. As a young adult he assisted with the operation of the family farm and was employed on a part-time basis by various companies. Then, he worked full-time as a truck driver for Nash Finch Company for 10 years.

Herman married Joyce Nelson on May 14, 1949 at the Zion Lutheran Church parsonage in Minot. They made their home in Minot where Bud was employed for four years as a mechanic before transferring to the parts department at Farmers Union where he eventually became the Manager of the Parts Department. He retired from full-time work in 1996 but worked part-time through 2002. He was seasonally employed as a truck driver for various companies until just before his 85th birthday. Bud and Joyce lived in South Prairie most of their married lives. Joyce died on January 21, 2018. Bud moved to Dakota Terrace in Minot in August of 2018 and most recently had resided at Somerset Court.

Bud was a member of Saron Lutheran Church – rural Minot where he served as treasurer for seventeen years. He was a member of the Dakota Territory Air Museum Board of Directors and was a life member of the Moose Lodge. Also, he was a member of the Eagles Aerie and Civil Air Patrol having had his pilot’s license since 1974. Bud played league softball for many years and then took up golf. He was an avid bowler throughout his life.

During his work at Farmers Union and his truck driving days, Bud encountered a vast number of people throughout the region and state. He was noted for his excellent service, his helpfulness, and his friendliness. He chatted easily with all and was willing to share many lengthy accounts of things going on in his life. It was common for those accounts to be interrupted, but he would happily resume his story with “well anyway…”

Herman’s loving surviving family includes his children and sons/daughters-in-law: Judith (Melvin) Karch of Valley City, Cheryl Nilsen of Minot, Kathleen (Dean) Clott of Minot, Cheryl Tryhus of Bismarck, Rodney Tryhus of Minot, Brian (Mary West) Tryhus of Mankato MN, and Neil (Christy) Tryhus of Owatonna MN; grandchildren and great grandchildren: Christopher (Brenda) Karch (Aspen, Chase), Nicki (Justin Stringer) Karch (Blake, Bryn and Connor Remick), Jared Nilsen (James, Miles), Dana (Howard) Olson (Thor, Trygve), Ashley (Torrac Hayes) Nilsen, Corrie (Jeff) Renner (Alison, Emily, Isabella, Matthew), Samantha (Mike John) Moore, Matthew Solberg (Madison, McKenna), Andrew (Nikki) Tryhus, Chelsie Tryhus (Taleah), Jessica (Scott) Villery (Leo), Aaron (Miriam) Tryhus, and Alex Tryhus; half-sisters: Sandra (Sam) Speerstra of Great Falls MT and Linda Krupa of Hemet CA; brothers-in-law: Clifford Nelson of Minot and Bob Markle of Minot; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Now as we say goodbye to a fantastic Dad, Grandpa, Great-grandpa, Brother / Brother-in-law, Uncle, and Cousin, we remember his work ethic, his kindness, and his sharing of himself with others. So now we simply say “Well, anyway…”
