George Malaktaris, 92, Minot, passed away on Sunday, February 8, 2026, in a Minot hospital.
George Antonios Malaktaris was born on December 4, 1933, the son of Antonios G. and Maria (Zanios) Malaktaris in Mason City, IA. He was raised and educated in Mason City.
On April 12, 1953, George was united in marriage to Georgia Alex in a Greek Orthodox Ceremony in Rochester, MN. They made their home in Mason City, IA, Fort Smith, AK, and Manhattan, KS, where George was stationed in the US Army. Following his discharge, the family lived in Mason City and Rochester, where he furthered his education by attending Hair Styling School. Following graduation, the family moved to Minot, ND, where George worked at Gilmore’s, before starting his own business Hair by George, a company he owned and operated until retirement. Georgia passed away on July 5, 2018.
George enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, raising Labrador Retrievers, was a lifetime member of the St. Peter the Aleut Orthodox Church, the Parish Council, Minot Retriever Club, and Pheasants for the Future. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend and will be missed by all that knew him.
He is survived by:
Four children: Maria (Greg) Carpenter, Minot, Jami (Robert) Thom, Minot, Anthony “Tony” (Ruth) Malaktaris, Bismarck, and Arita “Rita” (Craig) Golden, Sergeant Bluff, IA; 13 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson; two siblings Arita Travlos and Philothea Heltinger; along with several cousins also survive.
George was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Georgia, siblings Bessie Halloran, Ethel Despenes, Helen Lamont, Stella Rickoff.
Visitation: Friday, February 13, 2026 from 5 until 7 p.m. at Thompson Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
Orthodox Rite of Liturgy: Saturday, February 14, 2026, 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter the Aleut Orthodox Church, Minot.
Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the St. Peter the Aleut Orthodox Church, Minot, ND.
