Duane R. Larson, 83, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2026. A lifelong steward of the land, Duane was born on November 8, 1942, to Irvin and Selma Larson and spent his life rooted in the family farm and ranch that shaped both his work and his character.
Duane attended country school through the eighth grade before transferring to Minot High School, where he graduated in 1960. He was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, a faith community that remained meaningful to him throughout his life.
Farming was more than an occupation for Duane — it was his passion. He was a dedicated supporter of FFA and agriculture in all its forms and took great pride in his cattle and the care he gave to the land. He farmed alongside his nephew, Steve, until his retirement in 2007, though “retirement” never truly slowed him down. Even then, Duane could always be counted on as the most dedicated farm movement coordinator around, making sure everything — and everyone — was in the right place.
Duane had a gift for bringing fun wherever he went. His nieces and nephews especially treasured time at the farm, eagerly returning again and again for the laughter, stories, and mischief that always followed him. He also enjoyed woodworking and photography, capturing countless images of wildlife and the natural beauty that surrounded his home — moments that reflected his deep appreciation for the world around him.
In recent years, Duane faced the challenges of dementia and eventually made the move to a memory care facility. The family extends their deepest gratitude to the compassionate staff at MapleView in Minot and the Benedictine Living Center in Garrison for the love, care, and support they provided during his time there.
Duane is survived by his sisters, Marilyn and Janet (Bill); his brother, Lyle (Paulette); many nieces and nephews who remember him with great affection; and Barney Bradley, his lifelong friend and partner in mischief.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Irvin and Selma Larson; his brothers, Don (Shirley) and Jerry (Terry); Sister Marlene and his nephew, Dale; and many dear friends who have gone on before him.
Duane will be remembered for his hard work, his humor, his generosity of spirit, and his enduring love for family, farming, and the land he called home.
Visitation: Friday, February 6, 2026 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Thomas Family Funeral Home.
Burial will take place at a later date.
