Eunice Wunderlich

Feb. 2, 1933-Jan. 24, 2026

Velva

Eunice D. Wunderlich, 92, Velva, ND, passed away Saturday, January 24, 2026.

Eunice D. Holte was born February 2, 1933, at home near Voltaire, ND, to Alfred and Freda (Erickson) Holte. Eunice was baptized and confirmed at Hjerdal Lutheran Church, Voltaire. She graduated from Velva High School in 1951 and worked for J.C. Penny in Velva. Following high school, she attended summer school at Minot State College.

On September 2, 1951, she married her high school sweetheart, Vernon Wunderlich, son of Walter and Esther Wunderlich. They were married at Hjerdal Lutheran Church, making their home south of Voltaire where they farmed. Eunice was a stay-at-home mother. To this union, five daughters were born, Colleen, Joan, Jan, Julie, and Cheri. She was a proud, loving mother and cherished every moment with them. Eunice enjoyed sewing and created many dresses, even for Barbie dolls.

Being a grandparent to Erin and Cailin, and a great-grandparent to Kai and Banks, meant everything to her; she treasured them. Family was special to Eunice.

Eunice belonged to a Country Homemakers Club, Velva Woman’s Club, the Velva Republican Women and was treasurer for the 7th District. She was a long-time member of the Readers Forum, where she always looked forward to September when she hosted it. She also worked for the Thompson Larson Funeral Home in Velva. Eunice was a member of Oak Valley Lutheran Church in Velva.

She was a big sports fan, especially the Velva Aggies, Minnesota Vikings, and the Fighting Sioux Hockey. In 1995, she and Vernon moved their house into Velva.

Eunice and Vernon enjoyed traveling, which included two trips to Europe, cruises, and countless trips throughout the United States. After Vernon’s passing, she went on trips with her daughters. The first trip to New York City was the most memorable; getting asked to leave the taxi, but never knowing why, was one of the greatest laughs ever. There were the annual get-togethers in Grand Forks, the last one being in July 2025. The memories that were created…endless.

She loved to bake and cook. Eunice loved looking through the newspapers and magazines, clipping out recipes. Her banana chocolate chip cookies were frequently requested by her daughters; and she will forever be known for THE toffee bars.

Eunice’s home was always open; she loved having company and always had coffee ready for whoever stopped by, and maybe some toffee bars.

Eunice is survived by her daughters, Colleen Wunderlich, Bismarck, Joan (Monte) Hansen, Velva, Jan Wunderlich, Grand Forks, Julie Wunderlich, Grand Forks and special friend Tom Mathis, and Cheri Gackle (Robert) Velva; granddaughters, Erin (Rod) Taylor, Richfield, MN and Cailin Gackle, two great-grandsons, Kai Vernon and Banks Robert, Minot; sister-in-law, Lois

Wunderlich, Velva and brother-in-law, Dr. Walter Wunderlich, Camarillo, CA and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Eunice was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon, of 57 years; brother, Ardell Holte; sisters-in-law, Deloris Holte, Ursula, Annis, and Agnes Wunderlich; brothers-in-law, Glenn, Donald, and Eugene Wunderlich.
