Gary Green

April 11, 1944-Dec. 5, 2025

Granville

Gary Gainford Green, Age 81, Granville, formerly of Boissevain, Manitoba, Canada, passed away peacefully in his home under Hospice Care. Gary was the son and only child of William Green and Violet (Hammond) Green. He was born in Boissevain, Manitoba and was raised on a small grain and livestock farm, Green’s Angus Farm. He loved working with Angus cattle from a young age and showed his animals at many 4-H shows and local fairs. He attended school through Grade 11 in Boissevain. He moved to Iowa his senior year to work for an Angus breeder and graduated in 1963 from Winfield High School, Winfield, Iowa. He spent 3 years attending Iowa State University, in Ames, Iowa. He left university and had experience fitting and showing purebred Angus cattle for some of the top Angus herds in the US and Canada; including Wallbridge Farms, New York; Haystack Angus, Colorado; and Hawkeye Acres, Iowa. In 1968, Gary was hired as a fieldman for the Angus Journal, Webster City, Iowa. He moved to Lethbridge, Alberta and traveled his territory from there selling advertising and providing ring service at purebred Angus sales.

In 1976, he married Merry Frey, at the Frey Angus Ranch, near Granville. They moved to a ranch at Elphinstone, Manitoba, close to the Riding Mountain National Park. They started Green’s Chianina Enterprises, importing, breeding and showing pure blood Chianina Cattle. They also operated Gary Green Sales Management, managing Angus and Chianina cattle sales. While ranching there, sons, Justin and Nathan were born in 1978 and 1980, respectively. In 1986, they sold their ranch and moved to Killarney, Manitoba. Here their daughter, Krysten, was born in 1987. Gary then worked for Investor’s Group, Brandon, Manitoba, until 1994, when he moved to Granville, ND. He then commuted to Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, where he sold manufactured homes until retiring in 2005. He had the ability to start up a conversation with anyone, anywhere, and his quick wit and joking nature always made people laugh and have a good time. He was also very proud of his Irish heritage. During his “retirement” he took up babysitting duties for his grandchildren and was a regular customer at the Memorial Diner. He loved studying the financial markets, and enjoyed watching hockey and football games, following his favorite teams! He was a member of Hope Congregational Church, and a volunteer Hunter Safety instructor. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He received a special award from the city for his volunteer work to help keep the city clean and well maintained.

Gary is survived by his wife of 49 years, Merry, Granville; sons, Justin (Lorissa), Maddock and Nathan (Carrie), Minot; and daughter, Krysten (Brooks) Magnuson, rural Granville.
