Chilas Cochrane, 94, Parshall, passed away Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at a Stanley nursing home.

Chilas I. Engebretson was born February 25, 1931, to Ingval and Cora (Gorden) Engebretson at Climax, Minnesota, where she grew up and attended school. She worked at St. Vincent Hospital and Rest Home in Crookston, Minnesota, for several years in laundry services.

On February 21, 1953, she married Donald R. Cochrane in Crookston, and they remained there until 1955, when they moved to Wahpeton. They also lived in Larimore, ND; Benson, MN; and Garrison and Kenmare, ND before moving to Parshall in 1964, where they purchased the Mountrail County Record. They owned the newspaper there for 26 years, selling it in 1990 when they retired. Don died July 23, 1997; Chilas continued to live in Parshall.

Chilas was a member of First Lutheran Church of Parshall and its Women of Life and Evening Circle; she was also a member of the Parshall American Legion Auxiliary and the Parshall Senior Citizens.

Chilas enjoyed traveling, going to Arizona for a short time each winter, and visiting and spending time with her family and many friends.

She is survived by her sons, Paul (Clarene) Cochrane of Carpentersville, IL, Scott Cochrane of Minot, Craig Cochrane of Bellevue, WA, and Keith (Sheila) Cochrane of Minot; grandchildren, Greydon (Christine) Cochrane, Chilas Cochrane, and Ian (Eden) Cochrane, Sadie Cochrane (Chris) and Ternes Cochrane; great-grandchildren, Jeremiah Patereau; step-grandsons, Nick (Nicole) Vannett and Aaron (Sierra) Vannett; step-great-granddaughter, Nadia Vannett; nephews, Mark (Deb) Engebretson and Ric (Paula) Almer; nieces, Judy Almer and Kay (Mike) Almer-Fernandez; and several cousins.

Preceding Chilas in death were her parents; husband, Donald; brother, Milfred Engebretson; sisters-in-law, Beulah Egebretson and Beverly (Richard) Almer; brothers-in-law, Edwin, Kenneth, and James Cochrane; and niece, Linda Vouk.

Funeral: Saturday, December 27, 2025, at 11:00 a.m, at First Lutheran Church, Parshall with Visitation 2 hours before the start of the service at the church

Interment: Parshall Cemetery, Parshall
