Bottineau

Caroline Berg, 91, Glenburn, formerly of Bottineau and Butte, ND, died Saturday, November 22, 2025, in a Bottineau Hospital.

Caroline Anna Marriett Knutson was born September 4, 1934, in Stanley, ND to Mathias and Rose (Walhaug) Knutson. She was raised on the family farm where she walked the hills and helped with chores. Her least favorite was bringing in the milk cows when she had to dodge the bull. Caroline graduated from high school in 1954, and she continued her education at Minot State Teacher’s College, earning her standard teaching certificate. She returned to Palermo and taught in a one room school for several years.

Caroline met her future husband Lyle at the Sons of Norway in Minot at a Saturday night dance, and sparks flew. They were united in marriage on August 31, 1958, in Palermo. They made their home in Minot until moving to Williston in the early 60’s. They started a business called “The Hut,” a place for teens to hang out. They operated the business until moving to Butte, ND in the mid 60’s.

Caroline worked with children her entire life. She taught a wide range of grade levels from pre-school to sixth grade. She poured her heart into teaching the young ones through creative play and walks in nature. She will be remembered for her sweet but firm nature.

They moved to Bottineau in 1984, and in 2014 Caroline moved to the assisted living apartments at St. Andrew’s, where she – and we – thoroughly enjoyed the company of the other residents. She then lived with her daughter and son-in-law Sonja and Mickey for over four years, then resided at Edgewood Vista in Minot for a time until moving to back to Bottineau as her health deteriorated.

A gifted gardener, Caroline was known for her beautiful plants nurtured to a bountiful harvest. Working the soil and arranging flowers and vegetables gave her deep satisfaction.

Survivors include: siblings Morris Knutson (Joanne), Helena, MT, Lovina Moger (Harlow), Woodbury, MN; children Lowell Berg (Vonda), Bottineau, Georgette Pratt, Minot, Sonja Mickelson (Michael), Glenburn, Patricia Riker (Chris), New Philadelphia, OH, and Heidi Berg (Joe Persinger), Garden City, KS; grandchildren Jessica Peach (Kelly) , Dunseith, Mark Mickelson (Karen), Murfreesboro, TN, Anton Mickelson (Kendra), Casper, WY, Tyler Mickelson (Mary) Glenburn, Mitch Riker (Ashley Coburn), Nicole Riker, John Riker, all New Philadelphia, OH, Trista Wisely (Teddy) Wichita, KS,; fifteen great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Caroline was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lyle, grandchildren Jeremy and Jessica Pratt, sister Margaret Hanson, and brother and sister Orville and Marjorie Knutson.

Celebration of Caroline’s Life: 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 28, 2025, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Glenburn, ND.

Interment: Lynch Immanuel Cemetery, rural Minot.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the start of the service in the church.

Memorials are preferred to St Andrew’s Hospital, Bottineau, ND.
