Dunseith

Minnie Flynn, age 96 of Dunseith, passed away on Sunday, September 28, 2025 at a Bottineau hospital. Her funeral will be held on Monday, October 6, 2025 at 11:00 am at the Peace Lutheran Church in Dunseith. Burial will be at the Riverside Cemetery.

Minnie Jane Flynn was born January 24, 1929 in Willow Lake Township, north of Dunseith, ND to Bernie and Olga (Anderson) Knox. She lived her entire life in the vicinity, and was educated at country schools and Dunseith High School where she was Salutatorian of the Class of 1947. Minnie became one of the “Eight-Week Wonders” when teachers were needed and college students received eight weeks of teacher training, which gave them a credential to teach grades one to eight in a rural school. Over the years Minnie added more college courses and received a Standard Certificate from Minot State Teachers College. She taught at several rural schools, Dunseith Public, and Dunseith Day School. She achieved her Bachelor’s degree in Education during that time. For years she also filled her summer days managing the International Peace Garden American shop selling souvenirs and concessions.

Minnie married F. P. (Jack) Flynn December 28, 1948 and they made their home in Dunseith while raising their three children. Later they moved to Willow Lake Township. Minnie was an active volunteer in the American Legion Auxiliary for over 70 years. She served in offices for unit, district, and state levels. Minnie was the State ALA president in 1994. She also gave much time and effort to Dunseith Senior Citizens and was a member of ND Silver-Haired Legislature.

Minnie loved fishing the local lakes, summer or winter! She was a good shot, which enabled her to keep the raccoon population down at their rural home. She drew a once-in-a-lifetime Moose license, and got her moose! She enjoyed any opportunity to travel across the country to special events of family and for fun. Grandkids will remember being introduced to the wonders of North Dakota on mini trips she led with them.
