James “Jim” Wald

James “Jim” Wald, 93, Surrey, ND, passed away Sunday, October 12, 2025, at Souris Valley Care Center, Velva.

James Edward Wald was born December 30, 1931, in Minot, ND, to Joseph “Joe” and Anna (Boehm) Wald the 7th of 13 children. He was raised on the family farm in Norwich, ND, and went to school in Surrey, graduating from Surrey High School in 1950.

Jim met Helen Schiele at a dance in Karlsruhe in 1950. They were married on June 9, 1953. They lived in an old stone house just outside of Surrey. They lived in that house for 13 years before moving across the road in a house they lived in until July 2020. At that time, they moved to Somerset Court where they lived until June of 2025. The last few months they resided at the Souris Valley Care Center in Velva. Helen passed away August 30, 2025.

Jim started working on the Burlington Northern Railroad on November 12, 1957, until November 30, 1993, retiring from there after 36 years. He also farmed five quarters and 80 acres of land. He spent many years milking cows and then raised range cattle. After retirement, he continued to help his son, Joey, farm.

(Erica) Wald, Britney (Tanner) Vix, Levi (Peri) Wald, Madison Wald, Kylee (Rey) Obert, Morgan Wald; great-grandchildren, Ayden Amundson, Ethan Amundson, Tayten Amundson, Cameron Whitted, Kimber Whitted, Eleanor Petrick, Winnie Petrick, Ruby Petrick, Carter Poser, Alley Poser, Ada Poser, Grayden Wald, Griffen Wald, Gavin Wald, Virginia Wald, Brinley Wald, Ames Warner, Asher Wald, Oliver Obert, Octavia Obert; step-great-grandchildren, Ashlyn Vix, Hayden Vix, Lakyn Vix; sister, MaryAnn (Bob) Larson; brothers-in-law, Nicholas Schiele and Frank Schiele, Dave Volk; sisters-in-law, Elayne Wald, Alice (Jim) Miller, Monica Carpenter; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 72 years, Helen; son, Joey Wald; siblings, John (MaryEllen) Wald, Andrew (Matilda) Wald, Regina (John) Klein, Helen (John) Keller, Appie (Don) Rademacher, Ann (Ralph) Black, Leona (Richard) Mosser, Lorraine (Edward) Ziegler, Harold Wald, Rose Schwan, and Teresa (Jerry) Larson; nieces and nephews, Bob Wald, Rodney Keller, Larry Klein, Donny Wald, Rita Bachmeier, and Polly Frey.

Mass of Christian Burial: Friday, October 17, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, Minot.

Interment: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND.

Visitation: Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Vigil Prayer Service: Thursday at 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Memorials: are preferred to Our Lady of Grace Food Pantry and Surrey Senior Center.
