Minot

Mary Smith, 70, Minot, ND, passed away Monday, September 8, 2025, at a Minot hospital.

Mary Smith was born October 18, 1954, the daughter of Keenan and Marjorie (Flesvig) Smith, in Minot, ND. She was raised and educated in Minot attending school at St. Leo’s, Jim Hill Middle School, and graduating from Minot High School in 1972.

Mary was married to William Henrichs for 18 years in the 80’s and 90’s. The couple made their home in Minot. They cherished their beloved pets, Irvey, their bird, and Muttley, their dog.

Mary worked at B&B Drug store, Land’s Ambulance, and the UND Center for Family Medicine, where she worked for 43 years. She was a valuable and beloved part of the office staff. She retired in 2019 and holds the record for the longest employment at the clinic. She worked with the very first round of resident doctors in the program. She was a positive influence on the careers of the many doctors who worked and trained there. Her special talents at group development brought her co-workers together and helped each flourish in their careers and as people. She made many lifelong friends during her time at the clinic.

Mary showed her love for family by giving up her own home and moving back into her childhood home to care for her mother. Mary loved her home and was able to turn her childhood home into a cozy home that expressed her vibrant personality. She particularly loved antique plates and art items that featured birds. She found joy in shopping for and finding the perfect things for her home and her friends and family members. Her siblings, nieces, and nephews share many fond memories of Mary as a person generous with her love and attention, both silly and serious. Her nieces and nephews indicated their special bond with her by calling her “Auntie” as a term of endearment instead of “Aunt.”

Mary’s beloved friends were an integral part of her life. They were loyal and caring through the good and bad times. She loved going to lunch or dinner with them and sharing stories and laughter.

Mary expressed her fun personality in her personal style choices. She was known for her leopard print clothing, purple hair, beautiful eye lashes, jewelry, colorful eyeglasses, and a multitude of shoes in every color and delightful pattern.

She enjoyed and expressed her appreciation for simple pleasures like watching the birds in her backyard, seeing crows flying in the sky, the taste of a fresh tomato or a farmer’s market donut and the creativity of handmaking cards and beaded jewelry for those she loved.

Mary was a member of Voices of Note, an all-female chorus. Her favorite musical artists were the Beatles and Aretha Franklin.

Her loving family includes her siblings, Paul (Tori) Smith, Catharine (Donald) Windmueller, and John (Lola) Smith; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and beloved friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Thomas Smith.
