Marie Magdalen Gefroh, 97, Minot, formerly of Karlsruhe, ND, passed away Friday, August 29, 2025, at Unsong’s Assisted Living in Minot.

Marie Magdalen Schneider was born September 8, 1927, to Willie and Odella (Schafer) Schneider near Orrin in Peirce County, ND. Marie grew up in Orrin, with five brothers and seven sisters. She attended Ellingdale School in Orrin, through the eighth grade and attended high school in Drake.

Marie married Walter Gefroh on September 3, 1946, in Karlsruhe, ND, where they lived and farmed on the Jacob Gefroh farm. Marie and Walter had five children, Diane, Patty, Marianne, Kevin, and Danny. They bought the farm in 1958 and farmed until Walter passed away on June 24, 1994. Marie continued to live on the farm until February 1999, when she moved to Minot.

While living in Karlsruhe, Marie was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church for 52 years. She was a member of the Christian Mothers and taught CCD. Marie assisted Walter in caring for the church cemetery, and she managed the Low-Income Apartments for 18 years. As a member of the Senior Citizens Club, she served on the Executive Board for 13 years. She was active with the school system and PTA.

Marie married Embert Sveum on August 13, 2003, at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Minot, where she was an active member of the congregation. They lived in Trappers Cove and later moved to Somerset in October 2013. Embert passed away January 9, 2014.

Marie moved to Unsong’s Assisted Living in April 2023. The family wants to express their sincere gratitude to Unsong Ringuette for her excellent care and love for our mother.

Marie was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother whose love was felt in her kitchen, garden, and home. She was known for her delicious baking, especially buns, caramel rolls, and kuchen, as well as her talents in quilting, sewing, and canning. Marie found joy in dancing the waltz, two-step, and polka as a member of the Polkaters, and she cherished time tending her colorful gardens. Meticulous in all she did, she took great pride in her work and in the life she created for her family.

Her loving family includes: children, Diane (Ryan) Zakopyko, Patty (Dave) Allis, Marianne Cole; 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Stella Schiele, Martha Fennewald, Ramona (Gary) Schmitz, Virginia Davy; brother-in-law, Mark Schmitz; sister-in-law, Alice Schneider; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents Willie and Odella; husband, Walter; husband, Embert; sons, Kevin and Danny; brothers, Jerome Schneider, Edwin (JoAnn) Schneider, Clifford (Barbara) Schneider, James (Maryann) Schneider, and Monsignor George Schneider; sisters, Bonnie Schmitz, Ann (Raymond) Hager, Yvonne (Bill) Strauss; brothers-in-law, Leonard Fennewald, Ralph Schiele, Dale Davy.

Mass of Christian Burial: Saturday, September 6, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Karlsruhe.

Interment: Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Karlsruhe, ND.

Visitation: Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Vigil Prayer Service: Friday at 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Memorials: are preferred to Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery, Karlsruhe.
