Kevin Dean Whitty, 64, of Minot, ND, passed away unexpectedly on January 21st, 2025. Beloved brother, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin & true friend to many.
Kevin was always there if you needed a friend or someone to talk and laugh with. He had a unique sense of humor that some would call sarcastic or “whitty”. He was caring and helpful to all who were fortunate to call him family or friend. He will be missed and remembered.
Kevin was born in Minot at Trinity Hospital on September 22, 1960, Kevin was the youngest of the three children of Neil and Jo Whitty, joining his older siblings Diana and Wayne. As a child growing up in Minot, Kevin’s parents owned the Blue & White Motel on South Broadway (Now Marketplace Foods). He loved helping and hanging out with his dad. He loved hunting with his friends and his Brittany Spaniels when he was younger.
Kevin attended Minot High School where he played basketball for the Magicians and graduated in 1979. After high school Kevin got his Realtor License and sold Real Estate for several years. He later started “Whitty Builders” and over the years was involved in many residential and commercial construction projects. Kevin built a restaurant for his mom and dad near the Garrison Dam in Pick City called the “Tree House”, which his parents owned and operated until his father’s death. He did the construction and remodel work to get Ebeneezer’s back open after the 2011 flood.
Kevin enjoyed cooking, BBQ’s, and inviting friends and family over for cookouts. He loved the Chili Cookoffs and the Rib and Brisket Cookoffs at the local bars and participated regularly. If you knew Kevin, you knew of his famous Deviled Eggs. Kevin shared a lot of great times with his friend and adopted brother Dusty Powell.
Kevin enjoyed stopping by his favorite Taverns to spend some time with his pals. He enjoyed watching his favorite sports teams with his loyal friends, including the NDSU Bison and Vikings football teams, and the Boston Celtics basketball team.
He is survived by his sister, Diana Olson; brother, Wayne (Darla) Whitty; four nieces, Jesseca (Brian Hopp), Janna (Aaron McKechnie), Karsan, Kylee (Josh Geer), and nephew, Casey (McKenzie Olson).
He was preceded in death by his parents; nephew, Hesston Whitty; and brother-in-law, Dick Olson.
A private family graveside service was held Monday, July 28, 2025, at Rosehill Memorial Park
