Jane Schlecht, 73, Burlington, died peacefully on Saturday, July 5, 2025 in a Minot hospital with her loving family at her side.

Jane Elizabeth was born on July 28, 1951 in Fort Worth, TX to John and Betty (Dodgson) Read. She was raised at various air force bases around the world.

While her dad was stationed at Minot Air Force Base the family lived in Ruthville, ND and Jane graduated from Glenburn High School in 1969. As a young adult she resided in California.

Jane married Derald Schlecht on December 27, 1970 in San Bernardino, CA. They made their home in Minot for a short time prior to moving to Burlington where they had lived since.

Jane continued her education as an older-than-average student at Minot State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Work. She was employed as a social worker for a short time.

Prior to that she was a daycare provider who owned and operated Little People’s Place Daycare in her home in Burlington for many years.

More recently, Jane was employed as a Home Healthcare Aid and at Somerset Court at the front desk and as an activities coordinator.

Jane was a member of River of Life Assembly of God and loved to assist in the nursery until her health issues prevented her from running after the little ones.

She especially enjoyed baking, canning, quilting, and sewing. She loved to read, spend time with friends, and enjoyed her grandchildren and great- grandchildren.

Jane’s loving family includes her husband of 54 years: Derald; daughter: Jenny (Perrie) Benton of Grand Forks; daughter-in-law: Sarah Schlecht of Minot; grandchildren: Samantha (Andrew) Leatherbury, Amber (David) Smart, Mikayla (Beau) Ricketts, Corey Bueschel, Jacqueline Schlecht and Elyssa (Parker) Ruziska; great grandchildren: Nevaeh Bueschel, Amelia Leatherbury, Everlee and Edyn Ricketts and Miles and Lyra Leatherbury; siblings: John (Pat) Read, Jeananne (Michael) Edwards and Joy Belt and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Janet Lotz, sister Joanie Read, and son David Schlecht.

A private family service will be held at a later date.
