MOHALL – Joan Alvera Otto, 73, Mohall, died Sunday, May 25, 2025, at a Minot hospital. She was born May 31, 1951, to Eldon and Avis (Sandeen) Otto. Joan was the middle child of the five born to this union.

Joan attended Clay Center rural school until the age of seven, when her parents moved into Mohall. She graduated from Mohall High School in 1969. She graduated from Minot State University with a bachelor’s degree in business. While attending college, she held jobs in Mohall at Piggly Wiggly, Paragon Cafe, the American Legion Club, The Flower House and Myaer’s Bar.

Following graduation, she taught school for one year in Columbus. She returned to Mohall and began a career as the Renville County Superintendent of Schools. Beginning in 1986, she was hired as the business manager for the Mohall Public School. She held this job for 28 years until retiring in 2014.

Joan was a loyal supporter of Mohall High School (and later M-L-S) sports as well as the summer leagues. In her spare time, she was an avid reader. She enjoyed her coffee dates with the girls, beer club and time on her deck.

Family: Joan is survived by her sister, Jane Anseth, Mohall; sister-in-law, Barb Otto, Mohall; nieces, Kristi (Mike) Scharnberg, Hartley, Iowa, Terra Heinz, Moorhead, Minn.; nephew, Andrew Otto, Mohall; great-nephew, Payton Heinz, McGregor, Minn.; and great-niece, Maizy Heinz, Moorhead, Minn.

Joan was preceded in death by: her parents; brothers, Gerald and James Otto; sister, Ardith Cemper; brother-in-law, Herb Anseth; and nephew-in-law, Matthew Heinz.

Graveside Service: 1 p.m., Saturday, June 7, 2025, at the Lansford Cemetery, Lansford. Following the graveside service, there will be a time of fellowship at Zion Lutheran Church, Mohall.
