Patricia Holmen

Sept. 28, 1938-May 17, 2025

Minot

Patricia “Pat” Holmen, 86, Minot, died at her home surrounded by family on Saturday evening, May 17, 2025, (Syttende Mai) after a 32-month in-home peritoneal dialysis journey for treatment of end stage renal disease.

Patricia Diane Breding was born on Sept. 28, 1938, daughter of Joseph and Myrtle (Bjerkness) Breding in Powers Lake, ND. She was raised and educated in Powers Lake, graduating from Powers Lake High School in 1956.

Patricia received her teaching certificate from Minot State Teachers College in 1958, then taught elementary school in Glendive, MT, McGregor, ND and Minot AFB.

On June 26, 1959, Patricia was united in marriage to Robert “Bob” L. Holmen at Bethel Baptist Church in Powers Lake, ND. They eventually made Minot, ND their home. Pat focused on raising three children, Robert E., Barry, and Bonnie, as a stay-at-home mother for the next several years.

In Oct.1970, Pat resumed employment with Minot Insurance Agency/United Insurance Agency in the roles of Bond Department Secretary and Customer Service Representative for just over twenty years.

Patricia could be found supporting her children and grandchildren at numerous athletic contests, music concerts and many other school and community events over the years. She loved and supported them in all their endeavors.

Patricia’s faith in God was evident. She loved her Lord. Patricia was an active member and participant at both Bethel Baptist Church in Powers Lake and Immanuel Baptist Church in Minot, serving in a variety of capacities.

She was a talented singer and shared her love of music in multiple ways. Pat led children’s music and adult church choir. She directed multiple Sunday School Christmas programs and Adult Choir cantatas. Singing in a ladies’ trio and a family/friends octet were special and favorite activities.

Patricia and husband, Robert, shared a love for church mission work, together serving as church mission chairs for many years.

These duties led to close friendships and church partnerships with Christian pastors and missionaries from as far away as India, Cuba, and the DR Congo.

Upon retirement, Bob and Patricia enjoyed traveling. A visit to Norway and Sweden (first time meeting special family members!), and adventures in Alaska, the Oregon coast, the Great Smoky Mountains, and parts of New England were highlights.

A particularly favorite winter landing spot was St. George Island in the Florida Gulf. Seashells, dolphins, diving pelicans, and the sound of ocean surf always made Pat smile!

Patricia is survived and missed by husband of 65 years, Robert L. Holmen; two sons, Robert E. (Karen) Holmen and Barry (Lynae) Holmen; daughter, Bonnie Holmen; grandchildren, Alyssa Holmen, Kallie (Brant) Baarstad, Micah Holmen, and Jacob Holmen; special great-granddaughter, Letty Ann Baarstad; sister, Marilyn (Dennis) Faul; several in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A private family service will take place.
