Past National Commander of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, Margaret E. Hass, 98, of Minot passed away on Friday, May 9, 2025.

Margaret Elaine Walleen was born November 24, 1926, in Bowbells to Joseph B. and Margaret Petersen Walleen.

She married Victor Hass. After WWII, Victor came home from his service in the Navy and they, along with their son, Lonnie D., moved to Vic’s family farm in a Minnesota Township.

In 1949, a daughter Vickie Carla was added to their family. They moved into Bowbells in 1961 and greeted their daughter, Melanie Jeni, making their family complete.

Margaret loved Bowbells and North Dakota. She filled her life with her family, her church, the school, the town and veteran organizations.

In her church, the Evangelical United Brethren, now the Bowbells United Methodist, she served on the building committee, church board, church treasurer, Sunday School Superintendent and Sunday School teacher. Concerns for the school, city and veterans made her a working member of many committees, including the Bowbells Area Development Corporation.

She was a Past President of the American Legion Carl Oftedahl Post #127 Auxiliary in Bowbells and after joining the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary in 1976, she served as Commander of the DAVA Unit #4 in Minot, Department of North Dakota State Commander from 1986-87, a founding member of ND Veterans Home Foundation, Lisbon, ND, National Executive Committeewoman of District 14, which included North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota and Montana from 1982-83.

She was honored to be National Auxiliary Chaplain for two years and after chairing all the programs of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary she was elected National Commander in 1996 at the 75th Diamond Anniversary of the Disabled American Veterans in New Orleans, LA. She was the first North Dakota woman to receive this honor.

Margaret held Life Membership in the Disabled American Veterans, Purple Heart, American Legion and Amvets Auxiliaries.

Margaret is survived by her Son, Lonnie D. (Mary) Hass Fargo, ND, and their children Jason, Aaron, Rachel and Adam; Daughter, Vickie Carla (Ron) Heisler, AZ and her children Stephanie, Tori and Amber; Daughter, Melanie Jeni Kuhn, Minot, ND; Ten Great-Grandchildren, Andrew, Alex, Jalie, Coy, Candice, Kendall, Morgan, Lincoln, Knox and Haddie; One Great-Great Grandchild, Baker; along with numerous special nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her Husband of 70 years, Victor; Parents, Joe and Maggie Walleen; Sister, Milly Hostbjor; Half- Brothers, John, Arling, and Lennie Walleen; and Half-Sister, Evelyn Jasperson.

Visitation: Tuesday, June 3, 2025, from 3 – 5 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Memorial Service: Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Vincent United Methodist Church, Minot.

Burial: Thursday, June 5, 2025, at 9 a.m. at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND.

Memorials are preferred to Bowbells UMC Church School. Margie has always continued to maintain her connection and passion for the children’s program in her longtime home church.
