Memorial services for Darroll Aas, 78, of Mobridge will be at 11 AM, Tuesday, May 20, 2025 at Kesling Funeral Home in Mobridge. Inurnment will be at 3 PM, Tuesday at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan. There will be sharing of memories and a meal from 4-6 PM, Monday May, 19, 2025 at the Mobridge American Legion. Darroll passed away Monday, December 30, 2024 at Sanford Medical Center in Bismarck.
Darroll Duane Aas was born on November 23, 1946, in Minot, ND, to Oliver and Evelyn (Oswald) Aas. He grew up on a farm south of Blaisdell, ND. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Shell Creek Church in rural Blaisdell. The youngest of three boys, he went to country school for a year before it closed then to Stanley Grade and High School. Darroll was on both the football and basketball teams, graduating in 1964. After graduation he joined the US Navy in the fall of 1964, he was stationed on the USS Wainwright. His specialty was sonar and radar. He was sent to the Gulf of Tonkin off the coast of Vietnam to monitor air traffic. Following his honorable discharge in 1967, he returned home to the farm where his daughter was born. He worked on the farm with his dad until he went to college at the ND State School of Science in 1969 and 1970 and graduated with a degree in Electrical Technology.
Darroll worked for several phone companies with WRT being the last. He retired in 2011. While in Minot he ventured out on his own as owner of Minot Telephone. During this time he got his pilots and commercial pilots licenses. He took both tests the same day and passed them both. He flew commercial flights in the oil fields and flights to Minnesota for games and to races as well for many years. He loved flying, hunting and fishing. He loved to joke and most of those who knew him know his “I’ll tell you what”.
Darroll moved to Mobridge in 1999 and resided there until his passing. He married Diane Fontaine in 2011. Darroll and Diane spent much of their time traveling to visit family and friends. Darroll was a member of the Legion and served on the Honor Guard.
Darroll is survived by his wife, Diane, of Mobridge, daughter, Lisa Nelson of Minot, ND, grandchildren, Sydney and Abby of Minot, stepdaughter, Eliza Perreault of Sheffield, VT, two brothers, Gordon (Sharon) of Stanley, ND, and Ray (Marlis) of Meridian, ID, brother-in-law, David (Holly) Fontaine of Gorham, NH, numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and many friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, nephew, Greg Aas, and his father and mother-in-law.
