Allen C. Hulberg, 74, South Prairie – Minot, died Friday, May 23, 2025 in a Minot hospital surrounded by his children.
Allen was born on February 26, 1951, in Minot, ND, to Clarence and Anna (Widdel) Hulberg. He was the beloved baby brother to three older sisters; Donna Mae, Betty Ann and Margie. They all were raised together in a small white farmhouse on the Hulberg Homestead in Freedom Township. Allen attended South Prairie School and graduated from Minot High School in 1969. He went on to continue his education at Williston State College – UND Campus for one year.
Allen proudly enlisted in the US Army on January 19, 1971, during the Vietnam War. He served his country in the 170th MP Company 6th Army stationed at Presidio of San Francisco until he was honorably discharged from active-duty service on January 18, 1973. Following his service, he returned to North Dakota and began farming as a 3rd generation farmer growing small grains alongside his dad. Allen was immensely proud to continue cultivating the family homestead that his grandparents had settled. Although Allen was most proud to be a farmer he also spent time working for Mackley Construction, Bacon Signs, Bourgault Industries and for a number of years, Allen worked overnight shifts at Wal-Mart while farming throughout the daytime hours to provide for his children who were still living at home. Through each of these job ventures, Allen learned lots of life skills but most importantly he made lifelong friends along the way.
Allen was once united in marriage to Maggie Iverson. Through the years they still remained dear friends. They were blessed with three children, Mat, Betsy and Nick. Allen did everything he could to support his kids. Whether it was sitting in the stands at sports games, co-piloting a last minute road trip or countless hours spent talking weather or life events on the phone, he continued to be supportive in every way he could.
But what really made Allen happy was being called Grandpa. His grandchildren were the light of his life. He spent countless hours pushing them in the swing or holding hands on walks at the zoo. As they got older he would support them in the same way he did his kids-with unconditional love.
Allen was a dedicated and hardworking man, he found great joy in the simple pleasures of life – hunting and fishing with family and friends, and spending time outdoors doing yard work. He was a friend to everyone, always ready with a kind word, a helping hand, or a good laugh. Above all, Allen will be remembered for the deep love he had for his family and his bright blue eyes!
He was a proud member of Saron Lutheran Church, Freedom Township Board, Minot American Legion, Minot Farmer’s Elevator Board and the Minot Moose Lodge.
Allen is survived by his three children, Mat (Tracy) Hulberg of Richmond, KY; Betsy (Bob) Andel of Deering, ND; and Nick (Amanda Aas) Hulberg of Minot, ND; grandchildren: Emily (Seth) Gibson of Linn, MO; Gavin (Olivia) Hulberg of Atlanta, GA; Ashton Hulberg and Breyden Hulberg of Richmond, KY; Finnley Andel, Frankie Andel, Etta Andel and Newly Andel of Deering, ND; Nora Hulberg and Ike Hulberg of Minot, ND; great-grandson Everett Gibson of Linn, MO; and his sister Margie Ahmann of Minot, ND; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
