Roger L. Jacobson, 84, Stanton, died peacefully with family at his side on Thursday, April 3, 2025 at CHI St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck. Services will be held at 11 a.m. CT on Thursday, April 10, 2025 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Stanton with Pastor Dennis Ristvedt officiating.
Burial will follow at Stanton City Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
Roger was born, attended by a midwife, on Aug. 6, 1940 in the Rice Lake area to Joseph and Joette (Hartgrove) Jacobson. He was educated in Torning School and was a graduate of Douglas High School in 1959. He was active in basketball.
Throughout his youth, Roger worked for area farmers, hauling bales and earned his own money for his school clothes. He had to work on the family farm, milking cows, gathering hay, feeding cows and all of the usual farm duties.
After graduation, Roger worked for a construction crew setting up lines for rural telephones for one summer. He then began employment with Bert Abrahamson, a farmer in the Plaza area for a year.
He later gained employment with Schaeffler Construction Company out of Fargo, ND, as a truck driver and worked in North Dakota on various road construction projects.
Roger married Karen Hummel on June 15, 1963 in Garrison. He and Karen went on to live on her parent’s farm in a mobile home while he continued to work on road construction projects. For a short time he was employed with Gary Brauer Construction. In 1966 he began employment with Consolidated Coal Company, and later with Basin Electric at the Glenharold Coal Mine in Stanton.
Roger was a member of the United Mine Workers Local 9702. He started as a truck driver and, before his retirement in 1993, held many positions including: mechanic, machinist, oiler and operator on the dragline and eventually back to truck driver. Roger was the first person at the mine to operate the “Lecta Haul”, a very large electric truck.
Roger and Karen moved to Stanton in 1973, have lived there since, and enjoyed a small acreage three miles from town. Roger enjoyed his large garden and yard and even some cattle and a horse. He enjoyed going to garage sales and puttering in his shop.
There was not much that Roger could not fix, he was jack of all trades. Over everything else, Roger enjoyed time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Karen; his daughter, Pamella Turner of Minot; his son, Dale Jacobson of Stanton; two grandchildren, McKenzie (Cyle) Golde and Cole Turner; two great-grandchildren, Emma Mace and Eli Golde; one sister, Marvel Bakken; one brother, David (Linda) Jacobson; and many nieces and nephews.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents; one son-in-law, Edward Turner; one brother, Lane (Audrey) Jacobson; one sister, Mary (Roy) Abrahamson; and brother-in-law, James Bakken.
Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
