Robert John Steeves, 83, Sherwood, died Saturday at a Kenmare hospital.
He was born Dec. 29, 1940, in Minot, to Russell and Florence (Stanley) Steeves. He was raised in Sherwood and graduated from Sherwood High School in 1958. Following graduation, he worked in the oil fields driving truck.
Robert married Karen Walsh on Oct. 8, 1960, at St. James Catholic Church, Sherwood. They lived in Westhope where he worked for Ben-L Trucking. He later purchased his own truck and began hauling grain from local elevators to Duluth, Minn.
After the death of his father, Russell Steeves, they returned to Sherwood, where he took over the operation of the family farm and also hauled coal. In addition to farming in the Sherwood area, he also farmed in Canada, and half of the Walsh farm. In the winters, he drove truck on the North Slope of Alaska in the 1970s and 80s. He retired at the age of 70, but continued to help out on the farm.
Robert served as Fire Chief of the Sherwood Fire Department and Ambulance Service for many years. He enjoyed bowling, playing pool, woodworking and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Family: Robert is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years, Karen Steeves, Sherwood; children, Timothy (Shanna) Steeves, Breckenridge, Minn., Jack Steeves, Minneapolis, Minn., Judy Steeves, Glenburn, David (Luci) Steeves, Sherwood; grandchildren, Chris and Amber Steeves, Kelsey Steeves, Brock (Lexi) Steeves, Taylor Steeves, Luke Steeves and Lauren Steeves; great-grandchildren, Zander, Connor, Kayelyn and Franki Steeves, Fayth Steeves, and Blaze Steeves; sisters, Shirley (Darrel) Ritter, Sherwood, and Lori (Gene) Johnson, Dickinson; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Robert was preceded in death by: his parents and grandparents. Funeral: 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 10, 2024, at St James Catholic Church, Sherwood. Burial: Sherwood Union Cemetery, Sherwood. Recitation of the Rosary: 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2024, at the church.
