Marlene Holen—-87, Mandan, ND, formerly of Upham, ND, passed away on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 in a Mandan assisted living Center.
Marlene Mavis Brandt was born on August 4, 1937, a daughter of Edwin and Edna (Mickelson) Brandt in Rugby, ND. She was raised in the Upham area, where she attended Upham Public School, graduating in 1956.
On December 9, 1956, Marlene was united in marriage to Irvine O. Holen. The couple made their home and raised their family in Upham. In addition, they worked alongside one another for Holen Construction, working throughout North Dakota. Irvine died April 11, 2005. Marlene continued to reside in Upham until 2021, when she moved to Mandan, ND to be closer to family.
She was a member of New Hope Lutheran Church, Upham, ND, where she was active within the ladies’ circle and quilting group. She was also active in the B&U Homemakers and the Upham 55 plus club.
Marlene always had a pot of coffee brewing and a welcome smile to anyone who walked through her door. Her home was a haven for laughter, conversation, and connection, where friends would gather. She was a loving mom, grandma, great-grandmother, and friend who will be deeply missed.

two sons, Bryan and wife, Kitty, Hazen, ND and Shelby and wife, Tami, Ham Lake, MN; one daughter, LouAnn and husband, Tony Debele, Mandan, ND; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; Siblings: Bette (Mark) Porter, Sharon Pettingill
Marlene was preceded in death by her parents, husband Irvine, and a brother Myron.
Visitation: Wednesday, September 4, 2024, one hour prior to the service at the New Hope Lutheran Church, Upham, ND
Funeral Service: Wednesday, September 4, 2024, 11 am at the New Hope Lutheran Church Upham, ND
Burial: Wednesday, September 4, 2024 at 1:30 pm at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot
