Leland “Lefty” Schweyen, 96, Northgate, passed away on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Fargo, ND.
Lefty was born on June 15, 1928, in the family home in Northgate, ND, to Nicholas and Elizabeth (Grengs) Schweyen. He was raised and educated in Northgate, graduating from high school a year early, and joined the Navy at the age of 17. After his honorary discharge and a short period in college, he returned to Northgate to begin his long career as a farmer, in both Canada, and the United States, until he retired at age 85.
Lefty was united in marriage to Luella Hermansen in 1954, and they had two children, Connie and Timothy. Luella passed away in 1977. In 1980, Lefty married Rosemary Krueger and from this union came three children, Celeste, Kristofor, and Andrew.
Lefty was a deeply religious person, bible scholar, and was active in the church, teaching Sunday school most of his life. He loved his children, and stayed in close touch with nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Lefty was very handy, could fix anything and enjoyed inventing new things. Lefty’s hobbies included reading, politics and baseball. Lefty was an outgoing person who enjoyed meeting new people and was always willing to help neighbors and friends in need. He was active in the community including calling Bingo, square dancing and serving the local food pantry. He was a long time member of the Bowbells School Board and American Legion. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Lefty is survived by his wife, Rosemary; daughters Connie Schweyen and Celeste (Kyle) Thissell; sons, Kristofor (Courtney) and Andrew (Sylvie); and grandchildren, Owen, Kennedy, Sydney, Tyson, and Breigh; and numerous other extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Elizabeth; wife, Luella; son, Timothy; sister, Inez; and brother, Ted.
The family would like to thank all the family and friends who sent prayers, cards, hugs or called or visited Lefty in the hospital. They would especially thank the Veterans Administration hospital in Fargo, for the excellent care they provided Lefty in his last months of his life. In the words of the Hospice nurse: “Safe Travels Lefty.”
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at 2 p.m. at the Bowbells Methodist Church in Bowbells, ND. The service will be livestreamed for the public to view and can be accessed by going to the Thompson-Larson Funeral home website: www.thompsonlarson.com.
